Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties!
Important Information (5/31/95)
Welcome to Rockument's first CD-ROM title, "Haight-Ashbury in
the Sixties!" The following is important information for PC
users.
The title is a 2-disc set. Both discs work on Macintosh and
Windows systems. Disc 1 is called HAIGHT and Disc 2 is called
ASHBURY.
Start with Disc 1, HAIGHT, if you want to run the TURN ON
rockumentary. Start with Disc 2, ASHBURY, if you want to play
the DROP OUT game. Start with either disc to see the contents
of that disc (in the TUNE IN section).
Requirements
To run on a multimedia-equipped PC, you need a PC that uses
an Intel or equivalent 486SX/25-MHz or faster processor, at
least 8 megabytes of RAM, Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher
(with MSCDEX.EXE vers. 2.23, included), QuickTime for Windows
2.1 (included), a SVGA-compatible display set to display 256
colors (8-bit) in 640 by 480 pixel resolution, a SoundBlaster
Pro 16-compatible 16-bit audio card meeting the "Multimedia
PC Level 2" specifications, a mouse, and a double-speed CD-
ROM drive. Amplified stereo speakers are recommended.
Rockument recommends that you do not use any "RAM doubling"
utility or software to simulate real RAM. The minimum amount
of RAM required must be real hardware RAM in your system.
Installing And Starting Up
To install and start up the "Haight-Ashbury in the Sixties!"
title, run the SETUP.EXE program provided on Disc 1 (HAIGHT):
1. Insert Disc 1 (HAIGHT). If Microsoft Windows 3.1 is not
already running, start Windows.
2. With the Windows File Manager, display the CD-ROM drive's
disc contents, and then double-click the file SETUP.EXE.
NOTE: The SETUP program checks to see if you have already
installed a version of QuickTime for Windows that is at least
as new as the one provided on Disc 1 (HAIGHT). If you have
not installed QuickTime for Windows, or if your version is an
earlier version, the SETUP program can install it for you.
NOTE: The SETUP program also checks to see if you have
already installed version 2.23 of MSCDEX.EXE (a DOS extension
for accessing CD-ROM), which is provided on Disc 1 (HAIGHT).
If your version of MSCDEX.EXE is an earlier version, the
SETUP program installs it for you. You can also install this
file yourself by copying it to your DOS subdirectory on drive
C:. Version 2.23 of MSCDEX.EXE has been available since 1993
and is a standard part of all Microsoft Windows+ 3.11
installations (with DOS 6.2). Microsoft recommends that you
upgrade to this version if you have not already done so. If your
system is using CORELCDX (any version) or MSCDEX.EXE version 2.22,
your system will not recognize the "Haight-Ashbury" startup
program on the CD-ROM. You must be using version 2.23 of MSCDEX.EXE,
which is located on Disc #1 (HAIGHT) so that you can copy it
to your system disk.
The SETUP program creates the ROCKUMENT program group for the
Windows Program Manager, which contains the "Haight-Ashbury"
icon and the "Haight-Ashbury Important Information" icon.
3. Double-click the "Haight-Ashbury Important Information"
icon to read this file, which contains more information about
system performance characteristics.
4. Double-click the "Haight-Ashbury" icon to start the
program. You use this icon for either the HAIGHT or ASHBURY
discs. Start with Disc 1, HAIGHT, if you want to run the TURN
ON rockumentary. Start with Disc 2, ASHBURY, if you want to
play the DROP OUT game. Start with either disc to see the
contents of that disc (in the TUNE IN section).
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. The title won't install or run properly.
A. Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system
requirements. Also, make sure you have at least 8MB of RAM.
- - -
Q. The title does not display properly.
A. Make sure you have an SVGA display running in 640x480 mode
with 256 colors. Also, make sure that you have the proper
display driver installed.
- - -
Q. The sound isn't playing, or the movies play with hiccups
in the sound or video.
A. You may want to check the volume settings for your sound
card. The title requires QuickTime for Windows version 2.01
and the installation program installs it if you don't already
have it. The title also requires a SoundBlaster Pro 16-bit
sound card or equivalent card that matches the specifications
set forth by Microsoft for "multimedia level 2" PCs. You can
check the sound from your sound board by using the Sound
utility in the Control Panel. Choose one of the WAV files in
the Windows directory and press Test. Also, make sure you
have at least 8MB of RAM and that you do not have any other
programs running under Windows while you are running the
title. Also, make sure that an expanded memory manager (such
as EMM386, QEMM, or 386MAX) is not reserving memory that
Windows and the CD-ROM title need to run correctly.
- - -
Q. The sound volume is too low.
A. The title uses a special format for digital sound that
provides 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo (CD quality) sound in a
compressed space. (It is not "red book audio" which can be
found on regular audio CDs and some CD-ROM titles, which
limits the animation that can be viewed during playback.)
This format plays at a lower volume on PC speakers. Rockument
recommends that you connect your PC to amplified speakers or
to a stereo system with an amplifier.
- - -
Q. What happens if I win the DROP OUT game?
A. A picture of your card appears (the one you picked at the
beginning of the game), and the enlightenment sequence
begins. We won't describe this sequence, which is somewhat
different for each win depending on the card chosen and the
points for each attribute. When this sequence ends, the title
automatically quits to Windows.
Video and Sound Card Information
This CD-ROM title was created with Macromedia Director_,
which requires video drivers and hardware that fully support
Microsoft Windows+ 3.1 standards. Pleasing sound effects and
sound start-up response time depends on the capabilities of
the card and the performance of the system. This section
contains a list of video systems that have been tested by
Macromedia and found to be compatible with Director for
authoring and playback. It also contains a list of sound
cards that have been tested and are compatible with Director.
This CD-ROM title automatically detects which type of sound
card is installed in the computer and adjusts various
settings to get the best sound playback in accordance with
Macromedia's default settings for Director.
This CD-ROM title, created with Macromedia Director, requires
video software drivers and hardware that fully support
Windows 3.1 standards. The following video systems have been
tested by Macromedia (as of Nov. 1994) and found to be
compatible with Director for playback. We recommend
installing the latest available video ROM and software.
Contact the video card manufacturer for information.
Authoring and playback are not limited to these systems. If
you experience difficulties with a card that is not on this
list, first test it at 640 x 480 resolution with the
monitor's color depth set to 8 bit (256 colors). Next,
contact the hardware manufacturer to find out if the problem
has been addressed with an updated driver.

The following sound cards have been tested and are
acceptable:

MediaVision ProAudio Spectrum 16 Pro
Microsoft Windows SoundSystem Version 1
Microsoft Windows SoundSystem Version 2
Orchid SoundWave 32
Reveal Forte 16
Roland Rap-10
* IBM computers that have the M-Audio sound card should use
driver version 1.3 or higher for best results. Older versions
of this driver don't play all sounds in Director or AVI
movies. The version 1.3 driver did not pass the 16-bit sounds
test for Director. Testing revealed that 8-bit sounds are
corrupted when played after a 16-bit sound. At the time these
release notes were written, version 1.3 (dated 1/10/94) was
the most recent driver available from IBM.
Troubleshooting Problems
Most of the technical problems of CD-ROM titles are related
to device drivers for video cards, sound cards, or CD-ROM
drives. Here are some additional remedies and resources
available, but this information is in no way complete, and
you should contact the supplier for related information and
drivers.
We strongly suggest that you not use other programs while
playing this title, and that you keep other windows closed
while playing. Doing so may significantly affect performance.
Other things that can affect performance include
accelerators, file compression applications, networked
computers, and other hardware or software devices that are
not part of standard home computer configurations. If you
encounter any difficulties using this title, disable any such
devices to be sure that they are not affecting your
performance.
This title requires at least 8 megabytes of RAM. Your memory
configuration depends on the memory manager you are using.
Although Windows is a multitasking environment, we recommend
that this title is the only application running because other
programs might affect your computer's memory allocation. You
should also disable any screen savers that are enabled.
You must run this title on a "super" VGA (SVGA) card in a
mode that offers 256 colors in a 640 by 480 resolution. No
other modes are supported. This mode is designed for standard
13-inch or 14-inch monitors. To switch to this video mode,
you must first have the proper video driver installed. Most
video boards are sold with a wide variety of drivers to use.
To Change Video Drivers (you should have a working knowledge
of Windows procedures for changing display and sound
drivers):
1. In Windows locate the Windows Setup icon, and start the
setup by double-clicking on the icon.
2. Select Change System Settings from the Options menu on
the left of the Change System Settings dialog box.
3. Scroll down the Display pop-up menu (by clicking on the
arrow to the right) to the 640x480x256 driver. At this point
you might be asked to insert a specific Windows floppy disk
if the driver is not in your Windows directory.
4. If the 640x480x256 driver is not one of the options,
choose the Other Drivers option.
5. Locate the driver on the proper floppy disk, in your
Windows directory, or in another directory on your hard
drive. *(See Note.)
6. Click on Install, followed by Restart Windows when the
question appears.
Once Windows has restarted, you will then be able to enjoy
this title. If you need to return to another resolution and
palette for other applications, simply run through the above
procedure, select your original video driver (or another if
appropriate) from the pop-up menu, and restart Windows.
*NOTE: Some video board manufacturers require that you use
their installation procedure to copy and/or decompress their
drivers to a directory on your hard drive from disks provided
with your video board. If this is the case, follow the
instructions for your video board manufacturer's installer
then follow step 3 and/or 4 above to locate the proper driver
on your hard drive.
Getting the Most Recent Drivers
To get the most recent driver for your card (either display
or sound), first try the dealer who sold you your hardware.
In addition, most hardware manufacturers have bulletin board
system (BBS) numbers which let you download their drivers and
other information via modem. Most hardware manufacturers have
forums on the on-line services where you can access technical
support or driver libraries via modem. Please make every
effort to install the most current device drivers before
calling our Technical Support Department.
Help with Hardware Questions
If you have questions about your sound board or your graphics
display, please contact the manufacturer before contacting
Rockument technical support. The manufacturer of your
hardware will be able to answer any questions you may have on
the installation and specific setting for your needs. Listed
below are the BBS and technical support phone numbers for
